She was right in American and wrong in French
This is the whole misunderstanding, and it is not really hers. In the United States, “I’m Irish” or “he’s Italian” is a sentence about your great-grandparents. Nobody hears it as a claim about citizenship, and nobody asks which county. It is a way of saying where your people came from, in a country where almost everybody’s people came from somewhere else. By that grammar, a man with a French-Canadian mother is French, the conversation moves on, and somebody passes the potatoes.
In France the word means something narrower
To a French person, français is a nationality, a language and a set of opinions about bread. It is not a heritage you carry at one remove. A grandchild of Italians born in Lyon is French. A great-great-grandchild of Normans born in Ontario is Canadian. So when an American says “my husband is French” on a Paris sofa, the host does what any French person would do and asks the only logical follow-up: from where?
And French-Canadian is its own thing
This is the part that gets flattened. French Canadians are not French people who happen to live in Canada. They are a distinct people with their own history, their own accent, their own vocabulary and their own feelings about being mistaken for a branch office. Calling a French Canadian “French” in front of a French audience manages to mislabel two countries in one sentence, which is efficient.
What an actual French husband made of it
I showed him the clip. He watched it twice, which he does when he is deciding whether something is funny or a diplomatic incident. His position, for the record: speaking some French does not make a man French, having a French grandmother does not make a man French, and owning a striped shirt certainly does not. Then he asked whether the husband in question has opinions about butter. I said I did not know. He said that would have settled it.
The test we use in this house
For anyone trying to work out whether they, too, are married to one. Does he say bonjour to a shop before he says anything else? Does dinner before eight feel like a medical appointment? Has he sent back bread? Does he believe that butter is a legal matter and that small talk is an American export nobody ordered? Can he lose an argument and still be explaining why he was right forty minutes later? Three out of five and you may proceed. A passport also helps.
In her defence
She was being warm. She was a guest on a French programme, selling a product to French people, and she reached for the nicest thing she could say about France, which is that she married into it. Americans do this everywhere and mean it kindly. The sentence only fails on arrival. I have made worse ones in his mother’s kitchen, in worse French, and nobody put those on the internet.
The house verdict
Justin Bieber is Canadian, his mother’s family is French-Canadian, and neither of those is a lesser thing to be. Hailey Bieber is guilty of nothing but speaking American abroad. And for clarity: mine is the kind with the passport.

Questions, answered
Is Justin Bieber French?
No. Justin Bieber is Canadian. He was born in London, Ontario and raised in Stratford, Ontario. His mother, Pattie Mallette, is of French-Canadian descent, and he attended French-immersion school, but he has never identified as French.
Why did Hailey Bieber say her husband is French?
On the French talk show Quotidien she said “my husband is French,” then explained “he is from Canada, but he’s also French.” She appears to have meant his French-Canadian family background, which is how Americans commonly use the word.
Is French-Canadian the same as French?
No. French Canadians are a distinct people with their own history, accent and vocabulary. In France, “French” refers to nationality, not to ancestry, so a French-Canadian background does not make someone French.
Does Justin Bieber speak French?
He attended French-language immersion school as a child and has shown basic French in public, but he has not claimed to be fluent.
